Is Your Hair Shedding or Breaking? Here’s How to Tell

The hair collecting in your brush can come from two very different places. A closer look at the length, ends and pattern can help you figure out whether strands are shedding from the root or breaking somewhere along the way.

There is something about seeing hair in your hands that makes every strand look suspicious.

Was that a normal shed?

Did it snap?

Is that amount new?

And why does wash day always make it look like enough hair came out to fundamentally alter the size of your head?

The reassuring part is that shedding and breakage leave different clues.

Shedding happens when a hair completes part of its growth cycle and releases from the follicle.

Breakage happens when the fibre snaps somewhere along the shaft.

Both end with hair in your hand.

But what happened before it got there is completely different.

 

A shed hair usually tells a beginning-to-end story

Start with the strand itself.

A naturally shed telogen hair has finished its growing phase, gone through a resting period and eventually released from the follicle.

These resting hairs are sometimes called club hairs because the root end develops a small, keratinized club shape.

That end may look pale or whitish when you examine a shed strand closely.

So if you are holding a long strand that appears to be close to your normal hair length and one end has a small club-shaped root, shedding becomes more likely.

But I would not turn this into the internet-famous “white bulb test” and diagnose your entire head from one hair.

Hair roots can vary in appearance, and dermatologists use much more than the naked eye when distinguishing types of hair loss.

A 2025 clinical report on telogen effluvium, for example, used dermoscopy and microscopy to identify the characteristic depigmented, club-shaped roots among shed hairs.

The root is a clue. The overall pattern is the story.

MORE LIKE SHEDDING

The strand is close to your usual hair length.

One end may have a small club-shaped root.

The hair seems to have released rather than snapped.

You are noticing full strands from throughout the scalp.

And you may simply be seeing more of them than usual.

 

Breakage rarely looks quite so tidy

Broken hair can show up at almost any length.

That is why one of the first things I would notice is variation.

Are there tiny pieces mixed into the full-length hairs?

Do you have lots of shorter strands around the same area?

Does the hairline look fuzzy with pieces that seem to stop at several different lengths?

Do your ends look split or frayed?

Does one section seem unable to retain the length of everything around it?

Those are much more breakage-coded clues.

Hair-shaft disorders involving breakage can even produce visible fraying under magnification. In acquired trichorrhexis nodosa, for example, weakened areas of the shaft develop brush-like fractures and eventually snap.

You do not need a microscope to identify every broken fibre at home.

The useful visual is simpler:

Shedding removes the strand. Breakage interrupts it.

And because a hair can snap quite high up the shaft, do not assume every long piece must have shed naturally.

Researchers studying combing breakage have documented both very short fragments and substantially longer broken fibres.

Length helps.

It does not solve the case by itself.

 

Your ends may expose breakage before your brush does

Look at your hair while it is still attached to your head.

That can be more revealing than examining the pile afterward.

If your ends are becoming progressively thinner, rougher and more transparent, some fibres may be breaking before they reach the same length as their neighbours.

You may also notice:

Split ends.

Short pieces sticking out through the lengths.

Sections that feel unusually rough.

A sudden increase in tangling.

Hair that snaps with surprisingly little manipulation.

Or one area that simply never seems to retain length.

That makes sense when you consider how a hair fibre ages.

A major 2025 review of human hair friction found that weathering gradually strips away part of the protective lipid layer on the fibre’s surface. Bleaching, colouring, heat styling and mechanical grooming can accelerate that wear.

As the surface becomes rougher, friction rises.

More friction means more snagging.

More snagging means more force during detangling.

And somewhere in that sequence, an already compromised strand can decide it has had enough.

If the hairs in your hands are all different lengths, take a closer look at the hair that is still on your head.

 

Detangling can tell you where the breakage is happening

Pay attention to the moment the hair appears.

If a bunch of short pieces suddenly collects in the sink while you are forcing a brush through a resistant section, that is useful information.

Combing itself creates mechanical stress.

Research on hair breakage has found that crossed hairs, loops and snags can concentrate force as a comb moves through the section.

Some fibres break near the ends.

Others can snap much farther up.

This is why conditioner and detangling technique matter so much.

In controlled testing, bleaching increased both short and long hair breakage during combing, while conditioning reduced both types.

Newer 2026 conditioner research has also shown that effective deposition of conditioning ingredients can substantially reduce the force needed to comb wet hair.

For curls, that means slip is not just about making wash day feel luxurious.

It is helping you use less force.

If you regularly leave detangling with dozens of tiny broken pieces, try changing the conditions before assuming your hair is simply fragile by nature.

MAKE BREAKAGE LESS INVITING

Detangle with plenty of slip.

Work in manageable sections.

Start at the ends and move upward.

Stop when your tool hits resistance.

Limit repeated passes through hair that is already detangled.

Gentler usually beats faster.

 

Heat, bleach and tension leave patterns

Breakage often has geography.

If the shortest pieces are concentrated exactly where you repeatedly flat iron, bleach, brush or pull the hair, pay attention to the coincidence.

Heat and chemical treatments can damage the cuticle and weaken the fibre.

Repeated tension creates another recognizable pattern.

Tight ponytails, braids, extensions, buns and other styles can put repeated stress on both the hair shaft and the follicle.

That may begin with broken hairs around the stressed area.

Over time, continued pulling can contribute to traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by persistent tension.

So if the little hairs around your edges keep getting shorter rather than longer, I would not automatically label them “baby hairs.”

Some may be new growth.

Some may be broken hairs.

The history matters.

If that same area is constantly slicked, braided tightly or pulled into tension, give it a break and watch what happens.

A hairstyle can look beautiful without asking the hairline to contribute overtime.

 

More full-length hairs points us back toward shedding

Now imagine the opposite picture.

Your hair does not look particularly broken.

The ends are reasonably intact.

You are simply seeing a lot more full-length strands coming out than usual.

That sounds more like increased shedding.

It is normal to shed some hair every day. The American Academy of Dermatology puts typical shedding at roughly 50 to 100 hairs per day.

But sometimes substantially more hairs shift into the resting phase of the growth cycle and shed several months later.

This is called telogen effluvium.

Triggers can include significant illness or fever, surgery, childbirth, major stress, substantial weight loss and certain medication or hormonal changes.

The timing is famously inconvenient.

The shedding may begin a couple of months after the event rather than while it is happening.

So if you suddenly notice far more full strands than usual, think backward.

Not just to last week.

To the last few months.

 

You can have shedding and breakage at the same time

Hair apparently did not receive the memo that we wanted a simple either-or answer.

You can experience increased shedding from the follicle while also having damaged lengths that are breaking.

Maybe you went through a period of significant physiological stress and developed telogen effluvium.

At the same time, your bleached ends are snapping during detangling.

The pile in your brush will contain both.

This is one reason obsessively counting every hair can become less useful than looking for patterns.

Separate a few strands after wash day and inspect them.

Are most close to full length?

Are there lots of fragments?

Is one area of the head visibly becoming shorter?

Is overall density changing?

Has your middle part become wider?

Does your ponytail genuinely feel smaller over time?

Those observations tell you more than declaring the entire pile “shedding” because it came out during wash day.

 

New growth and breakage can look annoyingly similar

This deserves its own moment because it causes a lot of unnecessary panic.

Short hairs are not automatically broken hairs.

Hair is continuously cycling, so new strands are growing in at different times.

New growth will naturally be shorter than the hairs that have been growing for years.

So how do you tell?

Look at the overall appearance.

New growth often appears relatively healthy and gradually tapers toward the natural end of the fibre.

Broken hair may look rougher, blunter, split or irregular depending on exactly how it fractured.

More importantly, watch what those short hairs do over time.

If they are progressively getting longer, excellent.

If the same area continues snapping back to roughly the same short length, something may be interfering with length retention.

Photographs help enormously here.

A close photo of your hairline, crown or problem section every few months can show progress that is almost impossible to judge while staring at your hair every morning.

 

There are a few breakage patterns I would not simply treat with another mask

Most everyday breakage can be approached by reducing chemical, thermal and mechanical stress and improving conditioning.

But sudden or localized breakage can occasionally be part of a scalp or hair disorder.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes, for example, that breakage at the crown can be an early sign of central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, or CCCA.

CCCA may later produce noticeable thinning through the centre of the scalp and can also cause itching, burning, tenderness, bumps or scaling in some people.

A dermatologist can also examine the hair shaft itself when breakage seems unusually severe.

They may use magnification to look for abnormalities such as trichorrhexis nodosa or determine whether what appears to be breakage is occurring alongside a form of alopecia.

I would book an appointment if:

Breakage suddenly becomes extensive.

One particular area is getting noticeably shorter or thinner.

Your crown or hairline is changing.

You develop bald patches.

Your scalp burns, hurts, itches intensely or becomes inflamed.

Or you are seeing significant shedding and breakage without an obvious explanation.

You do not need to decide which diagnosis fits before you go.

That is very much what the appointment is for.

 

Take five seconds before you throw the hair away

You do not need to start cataloguing every strand in labelled evidence bags.

Just look occasionally.

If most of what you see is long, released hair and the amount has suddenly increased, think shedding.

If the sink is filling with pieces of different lengths while your ends and certain sections look increasingly worn, think breakage.

If you see both, treat them as two separate clues rather than forcing everything into one category.

Then respond to the problem you actually have.

Shedding may send you looking at your hair-growth cycle and, when excessive or persistent, talking with a dermatologist.

Breakage sends you toward conditioning, gentler detangling, lower heat, less chemical or mechanical stress and a closer look at the condition of the fibre.

The hair in your hands cannot give you a complete diagnosis, but it can tell you where to start looking.
